Stephen Curry And The Golden State Warriors Continue To Dazzle The NBA World

The Stephen Curry show continued Saturday night in Oklahoma City and it did not disappoint.

In a stunning overtime win against Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder, Curry and the Warriors continued to make the unbelievable, believable.

In a performance that can pretty much sum up his season thus far, Curry scored 46 points and hit a game winning 3-pointer from just inside the half-court line that sent him to the record books for the second time that night.

With the shot, Curry ended the night going 12-16 from behind the arc, tying Kobe Bryant and Donyell Marshall’s record for most 3-pointers in a game.

But Curry’s night of success didn’t end there. The sharp-shooting point guard also broke his own NBA record for most 3-pointers in a season. With 24 games left, Curry surpassed last year’s record of 286 3-pointers (288) and is well within reach of the 300 mark, which will make him the only player in NBA history to accomplish that feat.

“I never would have thought at this point in the season I would be closing in on 300 and all that kind of stuff,” he said. “That doesn’t make sense to me. I’ve always tried to push the envelope and keep getting better, but a lot has to go right to get to this point.”

The game, which was aired as part of ABC’s prime-time Saturday matchup, showcased the greatness and unparalleled unorthodox that is the Golden State Warriors.

Even when they’re supposed to lose, they win.

Down by 12 going into the fourth quarter, and Curry in the locker room after rolling his ankle in the third quarter, Durant and the Thunder had to believe the game was theirs for the taking. But just as soon as the idea of a rare Warriors defeat was expected, Curry returned from his injury and the Warriors, behind Steph’s record breaking shooting, stormed back in true Warrior fashion, making plays that had past and present NBA stars in disbelief.

The performance comes after a week of criticism from past NBA stars who claimed that a large part of Curry’s success is due to the lack of legitimate perimeter defense in the NBA, along with rule changes that have made the game so much easier for shooters.

“It’s starting to get a little annoying just because it’s kind of unwarranted from across the board,” Curry said when asked about the criticism from former NBA players. “We have a very competent group, and we have fun when we’re out there on the floor, and it shows, obviously.”

It’s too often that players of the past will chime in on a team or player’s current success, attempting to water down the current success with comparisons to a time when the league was perhaps much more demanding. But there’s no getting around the fact that this Warriors team, led by Stephen Curry, is special. Rather than comparing it to teams past, it should be presently appreciated and respected.

In his previous four games, Curry averaged 43.8 points per game while shooting 61.1 percent from three. It’s not surprising that the Warriors star point guard is also leading the league in scoring with 30.7 points a game.

According to ESPN’s Stats & Info, Curry is 11-22 on shots from 30 feet and beyond this season, being the only player with more than two makes from that range this season.

With the win 121-118 over the Thunder on Saturday night, the Warriors clinched a playoff berth and now boast a record of 53-5; they remain one game ahead of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls 72-win pace with 24 games remaining in the season.
