Ian Somerhalder And Nina Dobrev Reunion: Will ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Stars Ever Reunite?

Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev caused many longtime Vampire Diaries viewers a lot of angst when they decided to break up. Nina eventually left the show, and the demise of her relationship with Ian makes it seem less likely that she would ever consider returning to The CW series. However, faithful fans of Damon and Elena’s epic love story have been patiently waiting to see if Ian and Nina’s fictional romance will ever get rekindled on the show, and now they know whether there’s any chance of Delena reunion. Before you read on, be forewarned that spoilers for The Vampire Diaries are ahead.

In the eyes of some Delena fans, the February 5 episode of The Vampire Diaries extinguished any hope that they would ever get to see Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev interacting with one another on the show ever again. Ian and Nina did appear onscreen together, thanks to some CGI trickery, but Damon’s chance of reuniting with Elena someday seemingly went up in smoke when he accidentally set her comatose body ablaze.

Flash forwards hinted that the coffin burning scene likely wasn’t what it seemed to be, and Delena fans were given another flicker of hope during last night’s episode of The Vampire Diaries—as the New York Daily News reports, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) told Damon that he had hallucinated incinerating Elena and that she was safe and sound in New York.

This doesn’t mean that Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev will for sure reunite on The Vampire Diaries before the show ends, but there does seem to be a plan in place for Dobrev to return to her career-making series in the future. During an interview with Collider, the series’ executive producer, Caroline Dries, talked about the possibility of Somerhalder’s ex coming back for at least one more episode. Dries said that Dobrev will not appear in Season 7 unless she suddenly gets word that it will be the show’s last season, and the EP hinted that the plan is for Dobrev to make an appearance in the season finale.

“I would say that, if The CW called today and was like, ‘By the way, Season 7 is the last season,’ then I think we would scramble to make sure that she was in the finale. But as of right now, we’re acting like the show will go on, so no.”

According to TV Line, series co-creator, Julie Plec, said that the future of The Vampire Diaries is also in Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley’s hands. If one or both of the series’ male stars decide to walk away, the show will go the way of Ian and Nina’s romance.

Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev broke up in 2013, but they continued working together for almost two years after their split. During that time, Ian moved on with actress Nikki Reed and got engaged to the Twilight star. However, E! News reports that Nina didn’t leave The Vampire Diaries because she had a hard time working with Ian once it became evident that a reconciliation was not in the cards—Nina’s contract was simply up, and she wanted to start working on more movies. She reassured fans that she and Ian were on good terms and even used the word “love” to describe her feelings for him.

“I have an enormous amount of respect and love for him and everyone. It doesn’t change. It shouldn’t. Otherwise, why were you with them?”

While Ian Somerhalder is now a married man, Nina has had a slightly more difficult time finding lasting love. As E! News reports, she and her boyfriend of seven months, Austin Stowell, recently called it quits after seven months of dating. A source cited their full schedules as the cause of their split, and Nina recently provided evidence that she is indeed a very busy woman. Shortly after fans of The Vampire Diaries saw Damon finding out that Elena hadn’t been killed off, Nina took to Instagram to let her fans know that she was jetting off to work on her new movie, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage.

“‘On to the next’ as they say,” Nina wrote. “Onward and upward!”

Do you think Nina Dobrev would be willing to work with Ian Somerhalder one more time on The Vampire Diaries series finale? And would you be disappointed if she did not return to the show for its last episode? Sound off below!
