‘Tales From The Crypt’ Reboot: Classic Series To Return

Tales from the Crypt reboot is on the way. The classic series won’t return to its original home at HBO, but on the TNT cable channel. But the crypt keeper might not once again be using his spooky cackle to announce the horror about to unfold in each weekly episode. The popular series will be produced by M. Night Shyamalan, according to Us Magazine.

The Tale From the Crypt horror series will be part of a new two-hour block of scary programming on TNT. The programming time slot will be filled with both short and long-form horror storytelling designed to scare and tantalize viewers sometime later this fall. TNT has not yet given many details about the reboot or the other offerings that will be a part of the special block of air time.

EC Comics created the Tales from the Crypt storyline in the 1950s. When the stories and the Crypt Keeper made the leap from the printed page to the television screen in 1989, it was an immediate hit. The gore and violence frequently associated with the series were made possible by the freedom offered on the paid cable channel. The “regular TV” adaptation of the show could bring content and concept changes which could either delight or turn off longtime fans of the series. HBO ran the series until upsetting fans with a cancellation notice in 1996.

Although few details are yet available about the Tales from the Crypt reboot, the classic series is expected to feature primarily new material and not solely stories from the old EC Comics Series, Den of Geek reports. The comic book offerings that preceded the HBO series are still in high demand, with reprints still being sold by Dark Horse Comics. The artwork in the comics has been framed by avid horror flick fans from around the world.

M. Night Shyamalan has produced the Wayward Pines series on Fox and a tight-budget horror flick, The Visit, over the course of the past two years. He was not involved in the original Tales from the Crypt series on HBO.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be teaming up with Kevin Reilly, Sarah Aubrey and the entire TNT team in this unique endeavor,” Shyamalan said in a press release about the reboot of the classic series. “To be part of such a beloved brand like Tales from the Crypt, something I grew up watching, and to also have the chance to push the boundaries of genre television as a whole, is an inspiring opportunity that I can’t wait to dive into.”

The Crypt Keeper will once again be a part of the show, but if rumors about the reboot are accurate, he is going to look a whole lot different. Instead of being an extremely creepy skeletal figure with a shrieking laugh, the new Crypt Keeper will allegedly be an “old man with a cane” who is shown beneath a hood and sitting by the fireplace to warm his bones. This version of the Crypt Keeper is reportedly more closely related to the original introductory storyteller featured in the old EC Comics. John Kassir’s Crypt Keeper persona is still reportedly owned by HBO and, therefore, cannot be used by TNT.
