The New England Patriots at 8-0 appear to be sailing smoothly toward what would be their 13th division championship in the last 15 seasons. But at 5-3 the Jets currently occupy the first of two AFC Wild Card slots — and at 4-4 the Bills are just a game behind them and, with a key divisional victory on Thursday night, would gain the edge in the heated competition for one of those Wild Card openings.

Ryan, who makes at least as many headlines with his often outrageous press conferences as with the performance of his team, has already scored what he apparently hopes will be a psychological blow against his former charges, who are now coached by Todd Bowles.

Coming into Jets game, Ryan has named linebacker IK Enemkpali a co-captain of the team for the game. Why is that a shot at the Jets? Simply because Enemkapli was a member of the Jets until August when, in the training camp locker room, he punched quarterback Geno Smith in the face, breaking Smith’s jaw.

The Jets then released the 24-year-old, second year player out of Louisiana Tech, who was their sixth-round draft pick in 2014. Ryan and the Bills promptly signed Enemkpali to a contract, though the linebacker was suspended by the NFL for four games thanks to the attack on Smith.

Ryan protested that he has no idea why the media and fans are making a big deal out of his selection of Enemkapli as team captain.

“I don’t get it,” Ryan said on Wednesday. “I really don’t get it. It’s not a slap in anybody’s face. It’s not a sign of disrespect. It’s just what we do. You guys know I’ve done it that way ever since I came into the league.”

Smith, who will get the start at quarterback after his own injury replacement, Ryan Fitzpatrick, was injured last week, said that he expected Ryan to pull a stunt of some sort leading into the game.

“I don’t know why you guys are acting surprised,” Smith told a gathering of media members on Tuesday. “I don’t think you are surprised. No one should be surprised.”

With Ryan coaching New York, the Jets lost their last three meetings with the Bills, and four of their last five. Now that he’s in charge in Buffalo, the 52-year-old Ryan hopes that trend continues.

Las Vegas oddsmakers have installed the Jets as 2 1/2 point favorites at home, while the ESPN Power Ranking metrics give New York a 58 percent chance of defeating Buffalo on Thursday night.
