Does The PlayStation 4 Have Competition With The Nintendo NX?

The PlayStation 4 is already thought of as a superior gaming console to that of anything Nintendo will release, but a closer look at what Nintendo has in store for consumers is making people think twice about what they think they know about the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s capabilities.

The PlayStation 4 is the gaming console gamers have been waiting for if they want a faster, more visually appealing gaming experience. As much as 10 times faster than the PlayStation 3, the PlayStation 4 is much more powerful than anything PlayStation fans have experienced before, according to the Guardian.

But what about the Nintendo experience? Most Nintendo users expect a different gaming experience than one they would get with a PlayStation. Typically, there isn’t much competition or comparison. Nintendo is more reliable for portable games, which seem child-like in design and in play, according to the Chronicle Council.

However, Nintendo seems to want people to sit up and take the company seriously as a real competitor to PlayStation and Xbox with the hype over their new product: the Nintendo NX. The PlayStation 4 may have some serious rivalry with this mysterious console.

The NX wants to be as great as the PlayStation 4, or better, with portable capabilities. Claims to be more powerful than the PlayStation 4 or the newest Xbox are getting people excited about the thought of Nintendo’s newest venture, which would put the company back on the map in terms of real competition among home-based gaming systems.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the newest possible rival to the PlayStation 4 is still a big mystery, but what may drive the devices to success is seeing some light.

“The exact shape of the NX hardware isn’t yet clear. People familiar with the development plans said Nintendo would likely include both a console and at least one mobile unit that could either be used in conjunction with the console or taken on the road for separate use. They also said Nintendo would aim to put industry-leading chips in the NX devices, after criticism that the Wii U’s capabilities didn’t match those of competitors.”

More details about this new console are expected to be released in 2016, according to a spokeswoman for Nintendo.

As for the PlayStation 4, Sony has sold over 23 million consoles since the middle of 2015, according to TechRadar. Users appreciate better system-exclusive games, which Sony was formerly lacking and trying to improve upon, and its unique and attractive design.

Of course, it’s unknown how much the Nintendo NX will cost when it finally makes its debut sometime in 2016, or possibly a little later. The PlayStation 4 has scaled back its cost in time for the holidays, allowing people to save about $50 over the original purchase price.

The PlayStation 4 simply will not be able to compete with a portable design feature, but some gamers have already vowed allegiance to some of their favorite brands regardless of what comes out next. Sony and Microsoft have developed a powerful following from hardcore gamers, and are trusted brands in general gaming consumer groups. While Nintendo is also a trusted name, it’s trusted to deliver an “okay” gaming experience. People just don’t expect a powerful gaming experience when they hear the brand name.

Obviously, it’s going to be something Nintendo is going to have to work on if it wants to compete with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox. There will be many gamers who will stay loyal to the Playstation brand, so drawing those people out to try something new from a run-of-the-mill company will be quite a marketing challenge. It will be interesting to see the path Nintendo takes to try and beat out the PlayStation 4 and other competitors.
