Man Cuts Off Both Ears To Better Resemble His Pet Parrot

The internet is full of unbelievable photos of people who have done incredible things to their body for unknowable reasons. This week has brought us one of the most shocking body transformations in recent memory. A man named Ted Richards cut off his ears in order to make himself look more like his beloved pet parrot.

The sleek look of slicing off both ears in conjunction with some heavy-duty face and eyeball tattooing does actually work to make Mr. Richards resemble the colorful creature. But you need to see it for yourself to believe it. Check out the photos below, courtesy of Dan Regan from South West News Service.

According to the Huffington Post, 56-year-old Ted Richards from Bristol, England, underwent a major six-hour operation to have his ears cut off, while leaving enough skin and cartilage to maintain a sense of hearing, of course. He admitted that the size and shape of his ears got him teased as a child, but the parrot-lover insists that was not the deciding factor in having both ears cut off.

“I’ve done it because I want to look like my parrots as much as possible,” Ted Richards told SWNS.com. “I’ve had my hair long for so many years my ears have been covered up.”

The cut off ears didn’t go to waste either. Richards claims he donated the severed tissue to a friend “who will appreciate them,” and left it at that.

Despite the severity of the surgery, the slight loss in hearing quality and the difficulty of keeping glasses on his face, Richards claims he couldn’t be happier with how it looks, saying, “I think it looks really great. I love it. It’s the best thing that has happened to me. I am so happy it’s unreal, I can’t stop looking in the mirror.”

In order to remedy the sliding glasses issue, Ted Richards added another body modification: two metal pins inserted into the sides of his head where he had his ears cut off — just big enough to serve as pegs for the spectacles to sit on.

Looking at photos of Ted Richards, you may think he’s gone as far as he can go to look like his feathered friend. But now he’s seeking out a cosmetic surgeon who might be up to the task of transforming his nose into a bird beak.

And it’s not just one parrot that he’s looking to resemble. According to the Daily Mail, Ted Richards has two tropical birds that he absolutely adores. A green-winged macaw named Ellie and a harlequin macaw named Teaka. Since both birds have their own distinct color patterns, Richards has made a point to represent both on his carefully altered face. One side of his head is tattooed with red and blue feather patterns, in honor of Ellie, while the other side is green and red, just like Teaka.

Ted Richards realizes that his over-the-top transformation is fairly unusual and that he’s likely to turn a few heads. But not only is Richards glad he had his ears cut off, he’s proud of his different look and maintains a sense of humor about it.

“I went to the supermarket the other day and when I went in I said ‘blimey it’s so windy out there it blew my ears off and everybody had a chuckle… There’s no doubt that when they made me they broke the mold. But seriously, I love the fact that I’m unique and I have always wanted to be different.”

Would you have your ears cut off to prove your love for your pet?
