The Mighty Alanis Morissette And CL Tease Justin Bieber’s ‘What Do You Mean’

Alanis Morissette and Chaelin Lee (a.k.a CL) are the latest massive stars to co-sign Justin Bieber’s celebrity-assisted countdown to the release of his upcoming single “What Do You Mean” on August 28.

You read that right. Alanis Morissette — seven times Grammy winner, who once ruled the charts and changed the game for female artists — stepped up on what is 14 days before the heartthrob’s song drops.

Bieber’s fans were given a heads up by manager, Scooter Braun, that Friday’s countdown was a huge name. Late Thursday, he tweeted, “@justinbieber tomorrow’s countdown is so legendary and worldwide! #WhatDoYouMean.”

On Friday morning, after tweeting a sweet snap of a dog noting the two-week mark, Justin tweeted and Instagrammed a photo of South Korean rapper-singer and ex-2NE1 member, Chaelin Lee. Like Bieber, CL is managed by Braun.

Over on Instagram, the Biebs shared a fun video showing him as a child singing Alanis’s juggernaut 1996 hit, “Ironic,” a cut from her instant classic Jagged Little Pill album, before cutting to Morissette’s music video for the song.

The now-41-year-old singer-songwriter is also seen jumping backwards fully clothed into a swimming pool before saying, “14 days Justin. What Do You Mean?”

“What Do You Mean? @Alanis thank you ) #canadians #14days,” Bieber tweeted with the clip.

Ever since Justin hit up On Air With Ryan Seacrest last month to announce his new, “up-tempo,” “summery” single and kick off his 30-day celebrity-packed countdown, it’s been interesting seeing who turns up in the diverse roll call.

With stars including James Corden, Mariah Carey, Travis Scott, Ariana Grande, Shaquille O’Neal, Little Mix, Fifth Harmony, Luke Bryan, Ed Sheeran, Meghan Trainor, and now CL and Morissette, it’s looking like Team Bieber are keen to not only reach out to the Biebs’ traditional, teenage female fan base, but also other age groups and fans from a variety of music genres with the “What Do You Mean” countdown.

Having CL in the line-up raises her profile and spreads awareness of Bieber’s song to CL’s fans and Asian contemporary music fans. The inclusion of Morissette, whose career stats speak for themselves, is a prestigious coup for a young superstar making a comeback with a refreshed outlook, new, lead single, and new album after a difficult time.

Morissette has previously expressed empathy for the Biebs and the ongoing scrutiny and oft-misleading clickbait-centric, tabloid focus he experienced as a youngster going through an unstable period. Speaking to Canadian press on rounds during her 2014 acoustic tour, she said the following of Bieber.

“It’s very difficult because when you’re that age you’re trying to define yourself, trying to find out who you are, what your values are and what you believe in. You’re supposed to be experimenting. It’s a time when you’re supposed to be trying on red, blue, yellow, green, you know? Seeing what works for you and finding out what integrity even means.”

She added, “All of this happening in the public eye while you’re being hyper-judged, hyper-accessed… it’s not the ideal environment to be cutting your teeth on.”

Morissette continued, “It’s a very unusual circumstance to be famous, while you’re in the early stage of development… I still have PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) from it.”

In other Bieber news, Billboard reports multiple sources confirm the singer is on target to release his highly-anticipated new album on November 13.

In addition, Hits Daily Double hinted Thursday that the singer may perform (or make some other appearance, which hypothetically could include previewing a music video for “What Do You Mean”) at MTV’s Video Music Awards on August 30.

The Miley Cyrus-hosted music and pop culture event will air from Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater, two days after the 21-year-old singer’s new single “What Do You Mean” touches down, so the VMAs would be a perfect tie-in.

Meanwhile, the countdown continues.
