The Harry Potter series is perhaps among the most beloved fantasy series in the world. It has spin-offs galore, from short stories set in the Harry Potter universe, to video games, merchandise, and much more. One would think the author would be very proud of her work, so why is J.K. Rowling saying no to a TV series spin-off of Harry Potter ? According to the Guardian, a fan tweeted to Rowling suggesting the idea of a Potter spin-off being made into a TV show (seems like the next logical step), but Rowling was less than enthusiastic about allowing some TV production company to procure a Potter permit.

The original tweet asked when fans might expect to see a Harry Potter TV show. Even though there’s not going to be a Potter TV series, Rowling’s recent work confirms she’s not entirely done with the HP universe. According to Rowling’s website, a new play called Harry Potter And The Cursed Child will premiere at London’s Summer Theatre next summer. Rowling’s site PotterMore.com also hosts a variety of short stories that teach visitors more about the world of Harry Potter than they’ve read in the original seven-part series.

Den of Geek discovered that Rowling’s book Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them will be adapted into a film trilogy next November. That trilogy will describe the adventures of a wizard named Newt Scamander as he moves through a community of witches and wizards in New York City and will be set 70 years before Harry reads Newt’s book. As Inquisitr reported, the Fantastic Beasts spin-off movie will feature Colin Farrell.

Despite the upsetting news, some members of the Twitterverse were sympathetic, realizing that Rowling already has quite a lot of work on her plate. Rowling’s novel The Casual Vacancy was published in 2012, and was one of the first works she wrote post- Potter . Rowling’s new novel tells the story of a respected Parish council member named Barry Fairbrother, whose death causes a conflict to fill his spot on the council. Even though there is no TV series at the moment, it’s clear there is a lot more of Harry’s world we haven’t seen just yet, which hopefully means Rowling won’t run out of ideas for Potter stories anytime soon.
