One Direction Drops ‘Drag Me Down’: Is It A Response To Zayn Malik’s ‘Real Music’ Comment?

Was One Direction trying to drag Zayn Malik down by releasing “Drag Me Down” so soon after Zayn announced his solo record deal?

The surprise release of One Direction’s first song without Zayn Malik made Directioners go wild on Twitter. However, according to the Guardian, their joy has been slightly tempered by speculation that the band released the single when it did because Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne wanted to “steal Zayn’s thunder.”

One Direction did drop the new single just one day after an excited Zayn Malik announced that he had signed a record deal with RCA, so you can see why some Zayn fans are giving 1D a little side-eye. However, Zayn is the one who started this boy band beef. As the Inquisitr previously reported, the aspiring solo singer seemingly threw shade at the four remaining members of One Direction by tweeting that he’s going to make “#realmusic” now that he’s free to do his own thing.

Zayn might be regretting his decision to leave One Direction now that he’s seen how well “Drag Me Down” is doing on the charts. According to Metro, the tune skyrocketed to the No. 1 spot on iTunes and Spotify shortly after it was released. Excited Directioners also made the hashtag #DragMeDown the top trend on Twitter, and they’ve been very busy boasting about the song’s success. Many fans couldn’t resist mentioning Zayn in their tweets.

As you can see, One Direction fans seem to be extremely relieved that “Drag Me Down” is already performing so well. To them, its placement on iTunes and Spotify is solid evidence that the guys are going to do just fine without their former band mate. One Direction’s new album will be released sometime this November, and it looks like the boys shouldn’t be stressing about how well it will sell.

Because of Simon Cowell’s recent comments about One Direction taking a break after 2015, there’s been a lot of speculation that the group will split up in the very near future. If they do, at least they can feel like they went out on top.

Are you surprised that One Direction is as popular as ever without Zayn Malik?
