Kylie Jenner, Amandla Stenberg Instagram Feud Over Cornrows: ‘Black Women Are Objects Of Fetishism And Brutality’ [Video]

Nobody’s sure what prompted Kylie Jenner to don cornrows to promote her new line of wigs, but Jenner’s new hairdo has Amandla Stenberg’s blood boiling. Kylie posted the controversial selfie on her Instagram account, sparking a racial debate between the two stars’ multitude of fans.

Jenner captioned the controversial photo, “I woke up like disss.” And comments are still rolling in on Kylie Jenner’s Instagram page, days after she posted the questionable snap that got Amandla Stenberg writing “When u appropriate black features and culture but fail to use ur position of power to help black Americans by directing attention towards ur wigs instead of police brutality or racism #whitegirlsdoitbetter.”

Kylie Jenner snapped back “Mad if I don’t, Mad if I do … Go hang w Jaden [Smith] or something,” in an uncloaked reference to Jaden Smith, with whom Stenberg attended her prom in May, reports the Independent.

Not to be outdone, Amandla Stenberg penned a response on her own Instagram account, pointing out, African American “women are objects of fetishism and brutality.” Amandla Stenberg continued her rant towards Kylie Jenner over Instagram.

“Black features are beautiful. Black women are not. White women are paragons of virtue and desire. This appears to be the mentality surrounding black femininity and beauty in a society built upon Eurocentric beauty standards,” Stenberg wrote.

Jenner isn’t the first celeb to get in Stenberg’s crosshairs. Amandla Stenberg released a video, entitled “Don’t Cash Crop My Cornrows,” in which she explains, “appropriation occurs when a style leads to racist generalisations or stereotypes where it originated but is deemed as high fashion… when the privileged take it for themselves.”

This isn’t the first time Kylie has been accused of, well, racism, however. Earlier this year, the reality star was criticized for uploading a pic on Instagram, captioned “What I wish I looked like all the time thank you,” where Jenner’s skin is much darker than usual, reports the Huffington Post.

Although at the time Amandla didn’t have anything to say, after fans started backlashing, Kylie immediately deleted the photo from her Instagram account, and uploaded a different photo from the same photo shoot.

“This is a black light and neon lights people lets all calm down,” Jenner wrote to let everyone know she wasn’t wearing makeup to darken her skin, but that it was just a bad shot.

It’s hard for Amandla Stenberg to “calm down,” as reported by the Huffington Post, however, when “a privileged and famous young white girl like Jenner parades around in cornrows and darkened skin without fully understanding that these features have been borrowed… or that her actions have ramifications,” suggesting Kylie Jenner needs to learn some cultural sensitivity.
