Princess Charlotte Christening: Will Prince Harry And Pippa Middleton Be Named Godparents?

Princess Charlotte has her christening on Sunday, and millions of interested people around the world will tune in to see just who gets named as her godparents.

The second child for Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton is headed to St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham on Sunday for her christening, a bit of a departure from most children so close to the crown, who are normally christened in London.

While many are excited to see what the royal family will be wearing and whether they get a glimpse of Princess Charlotte, there is also a lot of interest in just who will be among her six godparents.

The last time that Duchess Kate Middleton and Prince William brought a child to church for christening, many expected siblings Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton would be named godparents. But though Prince George had a total of seven godparents, neither Harry nor Pippa made the cut.

This time many are waiting again to see if either will be named at Princess Charlotte’s christening, but already for one of them the odds look long. For one, Prince Harry won’t even be in attendance — he’s in Africa for the summer for a mission trip.

And the Daily Telegraph has already reported that Prince Harry already found out he won’t be picked as a godparent.

The odds for Pippa Middleton could be a bit better. Sources say she was passed over the first time due to her attention-grabbing lifestyle. Around the time Prince George was born, there were concerns that she was opening up the royal family too much with her public appearances and high-profile gigs.

Claudia Joseph, a royal correspondent and one of Kate’s biographers, said she wasn’t surprised that either Harry or Pippa were picked.

Pippa is his only aunt and Harry is one of his two uncles so they already have very important roles in his life,” Joseph said, via USA Today.

That may be changed now, at least for Pippa. The Standard noted, “Top of the runners and riders this time is, of course, Kate’s sister Pippa. There was huge surprise when she wasn’t among the seven people named as George’s godparents but apparently Kate and William felt that she was already struggling to cope with the media spotlight focused on her since their wedding.”

Those itching to find out who gets picked as godparents will be able to watch Princess Charlotte’s christening coverage live online thanks to live streaming video from the Telegraph. The feed will start one hour before the christening, which is set for 4:30 p.m. local time.
