As previously reported, Billy Joel is going to be a dad again with his longtime girlfriend, Alexis Roderick. The pair are expecting a baby girl , and she is due this summer.
In an interview with Newsday , Joel, 66, says that he’s excited and looks forward to spending plenty of time with his new baby this time around. “Pretty wild, huh?” Billy Joel asks the interviewer.
Joel has been performing monthly shows at Madison Square Garden and playing shows across the country, too. Now that he is expecting a baby with Roderick, who is in her 30s, he has given some thought to how a baby will change his life now. His residency at The Garden adds to his excitement that he will be around for his child.
“I’ve still got the mojo. I’m excited!”
Billy Joel has one older daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, with his ex-wife, Christie Brinkley. The 29-year old singer-songwriter has a friendly relationship with Alexis Roderick, and a very close relationship with her famous dad, but Joel reflects upon how his first experience as a father could have been better.
“I would like to have been around more because I was on the road for years and years when she was a little girl.” Noting that Brinkley was in Colorado after the couple’s divorce, Billy Joel missed out on some of Alexa’s childhood.
“But now I have a chance to do it better… Here I go again.”
Although the baby’s name is still unknown , Joel and Roderick did release information that they are having a baby girl. The father-to-be hopes to be a stay-at-home dad, with the opportunity to see his baby often. With great career success, Joel enjoys certain freedom and flexibility to decide what musical projects he will and will not do.
“I’m gonna spend a lot of time with this kid… I was thinking about that. I’m probably going to be able to spend more time with this kid than most people are able to spend with their children, because I don’t have a regular job. I could be a stay-at-home dad for as long as I can stay alive.”
Joking that his age may embarrass his daughter in years to come when people mistake him for her grandfather, Billy Joel adds that “all kids reach that age where everything you do embarrasses them.”
Sporting a fine attitude for fatherhood, Joel resides in Long Island with Roderick, and the pair have not implied any plans that they would relocate with the new baby. The media has also respected Roderick’s private approach to her pregnancy, as she has opted to stay out of the limelight until recently.
