Germany are widely considered the favorites to win the whole tournament, while Sweden — once thought of as among the toughest teams in the World Cup — barely escaped the so-called Group of Death, thank to drawn results in all three of their group matches. But under Coach Pia Sundhage, Sweden are still looked upon as the most dangerous underdog in Round of 16 play.
Against the powerhouse Germany, who won Group B with a two wins and a tie, Sundhage’s women face an uphill struggle to say the least.

The match pits the world’s Number One ranked women’s soccer national team — Germany — against the fifth-ranked side in Sweden. But the Swedes nearly crashed out of the tournament at the group stage — and would have been sent home if not for the expanded Women’s World Cup format in place this year.
Under the new arrangement, a total of 24 teams qualified for the group stage, divided into six groups. The top two teams from each group won automatic berths in the knockout round. But for the first time , the four third-place teams with the best group stage records also advanced.
Shockingly, Sweden was forced to rely on one of those third-place slots, as surprising Australia edged past them into second place in Group D, and Team USA won the group with a 2-0-1 record.
Australia must face a daunting challenge against Brazil and Marta, the top women’s soccer player in the world, in a Sunday match. The USA, by virtue of their first-place group finish, draws what should be a beatable opponent, Colombia, on Monday.
