Watch the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup live online as Canada takes on New Zealand in a crucial Group A match Thursday at the 60,000-seat Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. With a win, Canada almost certainly secures passage to the single-elimination Round of 16, while the Football Ferns must grab at least a point to gain even a hope of moving on.

The match will be an emotional one for 39-year-old, British-born Canada coach John Herdman, who began his international coaching career at the helm of the New Zealand women’s national team from 2006 to 2011. Though Herdman looks back on his days with the Kiwis with nostalgia, he has steered the Canada ship since 2011 and now brands New Zealand “the enemy.”

“They’re the enemy at this point, it’s very clear. We need six points. We want six points,” Herdman said at a press conference Wednesday — an off day for all of the teams in the 2015 Women’s World Cup tournament.

But Herdman is hardly lacking for confidence in his side, and wasn’t hesitant about providing bulletin board material for New Zealand, now coached by Herdman’s former assistant Tony Readings.

“We’re a better team. We have a lot of great players on this team. Quality for quality, we’re a better team than New Zealand,” Herdman declared. “If we live the game plan, Canada should win this game.”

The New Zealand players, on the other hand, appeared unmoved by the prospect of facing their former boss with their World Cup survival on the line.

“To be honest, as a team we haven’t spoken about John at all. He hasn’t come into it. We’re just looking at Canada as a team and how they play,” said midfielder Annalie Longo, 23, on Wednesday. “We’re going to use what we know as an advantage. Obviously I know a lot about him and learned a lot of things from him, but the way we play is a lot different now.”

The teams have met just once since Herdman switched allegiances, with Canada beating New Zealand 2-0 in a 2012 friendly match.
