Brittney Griner Looks To Have Marriage Annulled

Brittney Griner has been married to fellow WNBA star Glory Johnson for just 28 days, but on Friday she filed papers to have the marriage annulled.

USA Today reports that Griner felt she never should have married Johnson.

“Last Wednesday, Glory and I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage. I can confirm that today I filed for an annulment. In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake.”

This news breaks just one day after the Griner’s wife, Glory, shared the news that the couple were expecting a child together. Johnson is carrying the child and got pregnant through the use of in-vitro fertilization. As reported earlier here at the Inquisitr, Johnson was happy about the baby and seemed to believe that Griner was going to be around to share the joy just by the way she started her statement to USA Today.

“It has always been a dream of mine to start a family with someone I love.”

The relationship between Griner and Johnson has been a tumultuous one. The pair was involved in a domestic squabble in April that resulted in both being arrested and later suspended for the start of the season by the WNBA. Griner entered a guilty plea to disorderly conduct which will be expunged once she finishes 26 weeks of counseling. Just three weeks after the altercation Griner and Johnson tied the knot.

As for Johnson, TMZ is reporting that she was completely unaware that Griner was looking to end the marriage. A representative of Johnson released a statement that read in part.

“Glory loves Brittney and made a huge sacrifice to carry a child, put her career on hold, to invest in their relationship and their future. As a result she won’t be playing this season. Glory wouldn’t intentionally do anything to hurt Brittney and has tried her best to protect her and their marriage. She knows how important marriage is and made a lifetime commitment and decision to spend the rest of her life with Brittney.”

With Griner and Johnson already releasing conflicting statements this situation is likely to get a lot worse before it gets better.

Griner’s team, the defending WNBA champion Phoenix Mercury, is scheduled to start their season on Friday without Brittney. If you are a fan of the Mercury it is fair to wonder how all of this will affect Brittney Griner’s play this season.
