A ‘Sister Act’ Remake Is Coming, And The Internet Doesn’t Like The Idea

Sister Act is the latest film that will get the remake treatment from Hollywood.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Legally Blonde screenwriters Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah are writing the script for the Sister Act remake for Disney, and Cinderella‘s Allison Shearmur is slated to produce. There is no word yet on if the film’s original star, Whoopi Goldberg, would be making an appearance in the remake.

The first Sister Act, released in 1992, became a box office sensation, bringing in $231.6 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. A sequel, which earned less than its predecessor, was released in 1993, and the film was also turned into a Tony award-nominated Broadway musical.

Since news broke that the film was getting remade, many have taken to social media to condemn the idea.

With the success of the Sister Act musical, there is one actress that many have in mind for the remake.

While most people may be upset about the idea, there is one person suggesting that the film might not be as bad as everyone thinks. MTV contributor Victoria McNally notes that it seems like women will mostly be involved with the project — from the screenplay to the producing, and, most likely, to the cast.

“It’s a movie about nuns, after all — and this time around, maybe they’ll be able to bring more diversity to the cast.”

McNally adds that the film will probably also have a great soundtrack.

“Plus, now that a cappella is ~a thing~, maybe we’ll get a beatboxing nun! Tell me you wouldn’t watch the heck out of that. That’s right, you can’t, because it’s awesome.”

Sister Act is not the only ’90s film getting the remake treatment. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, 1996’s The Craft will also be remade, with Honeymoon‘s Leigh Janiak helming the project.
