M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Unbreakable’ Sequel Could Become A TV Show, ‘Wayward Pines’ Producer Looking Forward In TV

M. Night Shyamalan, the much-criticized director of Unbreakable, The Sixth Sense, and The Village, is looking to make TV show sequel of one of his films. Following the trend of transferring big-screen stories to the small screen, as well as the comic book TV show explosion of the last few years, Shyamalan is looking to make an Unbreakable sequel into a show.

M. Night Shyamalan, the once beloved director, has been away from the director’s chair in recent years to produce Devil and, more recently, the new FOX TV show Wayward Pines. With the critical receptions of films like Signs, The Happening, and The Last Airbender, Shyamalan’s career in film appeared to implode, so a move to TV seems to make sense.

Though Wayward Pines is in in its infancy, Comicbook reports that M. Night Shyamalan is looking to make his long-awaited Unbreakable sequel into a TV show.

“Could you do a six-episode Unbreakable series on Netflix or HBO? Yeah! That’s cool. I even had an idea of doing a story that goes in one form, and a second part that’s in another form, and a third one’s in a different form. You never do the same form. It would be like, movie, then, let’s say, cable, to TV, whatever, and then a play; it goes straight online, and it finishes like that. It’s in four different forms, and it never goes back to the old one. It could be kind of cool.”

IGN reports that though Shyamalan has yet to decide on whether or not to bring Unbreakable to television, he is fascinated by the way content has changed over the years.

“The form is now blurring, where we used to say it had to be two hours or episodic. Episodic meant that at each commercial break you had to do this or that. Those were the two forms, that’s it. Now, that’s already changed. The bizarreness of sequels in film is a little bit of what’s going on with the power of TV. Once you’ve created a world and struggles and characters that we now connect with, again, that’s where the story begins. So that’s why sequels have become so powerful. In the old days, it just meant you were gouging them for more money. But it’s almost like every movie now wants to live, and we want to stay with the characters we’ve come to love.”

An Unbreakable sequel has been teased by Shyamalan and its star Bruce Willis for over a decade, but to no avail. In fact, the Unbreakable sequel was mean to be part of The Night Chronicles, a Shyamalan-produced trilogy of films that started with Devil in 2010. M. Night Shyamalan’s fascination by the direction of TV shows in 2015 gives his fans hope for an Unbreakable sequel on TV.

Shyamalan may have been in the backseat producing TV show and films alike, but the Inquisitr reported that the Unbreakable director is back up to his old tricks in the upcoming thriller The Visit.
