U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was flown to a Swiss hospital on Sunday morning after a bike crash in the French Alps. Kerry is an avid cyclist and was going for a ride after a full day of nuclear talks in Geneva, Switzerland, with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. Kerry was attempting to ride a small portion Tour de France that would take him through the Alpine Pass.

Witnesses say that Kerry hit a curb and received immediate medical attention from paramedics on the scene. He was then flown by helicopter to a local Swiss hospital, where it was determined he had suffered a fractured femur. Kerry is being flown back to Boston via government airplane to be admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital under the care of the physician who performed his hip surgery.

The Washington Post reports that Kerry frequently brings his bicycle with him on trips and can be found cycling during breaks. The incident this morning took place after a long day of nuclear deal talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Geneva, Switzerland. Spokesman John Kirby says that due to the injury, Kerry will have to miss his trip to Madrid and “very much regrets” not being able to speak with some of our closest allies.

“The Secretary very much regrets not being able to visit Spain to meet with one of our closest allies for discussions on a range of issues, as well as being unable to attend the counter-ISIL coalition ministerial meeting on Tuesday in Paris in person.”

Though Kerry will not be in Paris for the counter-ISIL coalition, Kirby says that he will attend the meeting remotely. As far as Kerry’s injuries are concerned. Kirby notes that the Secretary of State is in “good spirits” and very grateful for the care he received from French and Swiss authorities in the area. Kirby says that Kerry is expected to fully recover and that at no point in the accident did he lose consciousness.

“The secretary is stable and never lost consciousness. His injury is not life-threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery.”
