Finally we come to the end of the 2010 6-10 NFL football clubs. I think 6-10 is what we though the Detroit Lions were capable of, even after their starting QB went down in the first game. I think we also though they were a 6-10 team when Matthew Stafford went down again later in the year. This is a pretty good football team that is still several key players away from being a very good football team. If they add a few more playmakers to the defense the year of very good could very well be not that far off.
Even without their starting QB for most of the year the Lions offense was still pretty good. They scored 362 points or 22.6 points per game on average. Those numbers were good enough for 15th among the 32 NFL teams. So backup QB Shaun Hill got most of the action, before he too went down with an injury. He completed 61.8% of his passed for 2,686 yards, 26 TD, and 16 INT’s. The running game averaged about 100 yards on the ground per game, and star receiver Calvin Johnson caught 77 balls for 1,120 yards and 12 TD’s.
The defense might need some work, but the D line is certainly a strength of this team. They gave up 369 points or 23.1 points per game on average. Their take away differential was +4, and they were able to force 21 fumbles and picked off 14 INT’s. They were able to sack opposing QB’s 44 times.
When we look at the numbers and personnel we see that the top needs remain on the defense especially at OLB, and in the defensive secondary. Those 14 picks are a little low, and this team remains thin at each of the LB spots. However with that being said the Lions could also use a hard nose, between the tackles RB who could go out and get them the though yards now and again.
