20 Dogs Die In Kennel While Senator’s Son Was In Charge

The son of U.S. Senator Jeff Flake was reported to have been left in charge of the Arizona kennel where 20 dogs were tragically found dead apparently of heat exhaustion.

As The Inqusitr previously reported , one of the dogs at the animal boarding house allegedly chewed through an air-conditioning power cord, causing it to shut down. The death toll originally was believed to be 17 canines. The power is believed to have gone out sometime between Thursday night and the following morning, although clients did not receive the horrible news until sometime Saturday that their dogs had perished. The kennel owners reportedly initially told pet owners — many of whom were on vacation — that their dogs had gone missing.

Of what is being referred to by authorities for the time being as a tragic accident, one of the pet owners told the local CBS affiliate that “[owners were] hoping maybe that their dog had run away only to have to identify a dead dog in a pile of corpses of labs and St. Bernards and goldens and Bernese mountain dogs just piled like meat, rotting.”

The owners of the Green Acre pet boarding house were away in Florida and reportedly left their daughter and their son-in-law Austin Flake to watch over the facility while they were out of town.

Controversial Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio , who is well known across the country for being tough on law and order and illegal immigration, has promised the affected families a thorough “no stone unturned” investigation by his detectives into possible animal cruelty in the dog deaths. Arpaio also pledged that politics will have no impact on the probe.

Sen. Flake (R-Ariz.) issued a statement today about the Green Acre incident: “I learned of this tragic accident yesterday. I can’t imagine the devastating loss these families are experiencing. My heart goes out to the owners who lost their beloved pets.”

A Facebook page has been launched called The Tragedy at Green Acre Dog Boarding Gilbert, AZ , with the stated purpose of seeking justice for the dogs and their grieving families.
