‘G.I. Joe 3’ Story To Get New Writer, Revamp The Franchise

The G.I. Joe 3 story has been long and difficult, and that’s not even talking about the movie’s plot. Ever since Retaliation tried to revive the public interest and still got slammed by critics everywhere, Lorenzo di Bonaventura has been looking for a way to bring audiences back.

Previously, it was said that the movie series, which brought Hasbro’s toy line to the big screen with live actors, would eventually get a third part, and for a few years now it hasn’t been looking good. Lorenzo has added a new writer to turn things around for Paramount’s military series. It might not be enough though, with the criticism that movies have gotten when they’re based on a cartoon or toy line.

Jonathan Lemkin (Shooter, Lethal Weapon 4) was originally hired to pen the G.I. Joe 3 story, and it isn’t certain if new writer Aaron Berg’s (Section 6) attempt to revamp the franchise will utilize anything from Lemkin’s draft. The new film was expected to be about Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson), expanding on his role from G.I. Joe: Retaliation, but Berg may take a completely new direction.

Aaron Berg’s only work so far, Section 6, was called a blatant James Bond clone for its attempt to chronicle the history of England’s MI6. There was legal action from MGM over the upcoming film, but since January, it has freed itself from these legal hassles and moved forward.

It’s obvious that Paramount is taking some real risks putting the G.I. Joe 3 story in Berg’s hands, though he may have learned a few things since then.

D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) has also been put in charge of directing, and with his history of films, we can expect something very different from the next live action film about Hasbro’s military toy line.

It’s too early to tell, but it looks like Paramount is going out of their way to mix things up with the franchises that fans aren’t so excited for. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, not only is Transformers getting a new director, but the next film will be split in two and getting spin-offs, taking after the Harry Potter and X-Men franchises.

No announcements have been confirmed about who will be joining the G.I. Joe 3 cast, but it’s likely we’ll see Dwayne Johnson return with a new crew once again. Hopefully, the focus will still be on him and we’ll see a G.I. Joe 3 story that audiences and critics won’t regret waiting so long for.
