‘Halo 5’ Live Action Trailers Date Release, Look Into Master Chief’s Past Creates Questions

Halo 5: Guardians fans got a triple dose of mystery Sunday evening with the release of two live-action trailers for the Xbox One exclusive that debuted with The Walking Dead season finale, as promised, plus a new audio log for the #HUNTtheTRUTH viral campaign. The trailers bring a release date with them, but the scenes before it may lead to some jaws dropping.

The first live-action trailer opens with Spartan Locke walking across a destroyed landscape. It’s not clear if this is meant to be Earth or one of the colonies, but you can see the battle damaged UNC Infinity hovering in the background. It almost looks like a demolished version of this concept art that was released last year.

Locke comes upon a statue of Master Chief with the severely injured hero of the first four Halo games at its base. Locke’s actor, Mike Colter, then recites these chilling words that continue to set the stage of the idea of the Chief as a traitor.

“All hail the conquering hero. Let us remember him as our protector and not as the one who gave us this,” he opens motioning to the destruction. “As our savior and not our betrayer.”

“Let us see him forever as you,” Locke says looking at the statue of the hero.

“And not as you,” he adds, looking down at the Master Chief leaning against the base of the monument with part of his left shoulder shot off.

“All hail the conquering hero. The one who was supposed to save us all, but now I must save us. From you,” he chillingly concludes his monologue, while pointing a pistol at the Master Chief.

The trailer then closes with a Halo 5 release date reveal of October 27, 2015.

As the tweet above notes, however, there are two sides to every story. Wait until you get a load of this trailer that debuted toward the end of The Walking Dead 90-minute finale.

Meanwhile, the #HUNTtheTRUTH viral campaign shares the first in a series of audio logs concerning fictional journalist Mike Giraud’s investigation into the Master Chief’s past. Episode 01 – A Hairline Fracture provides the first thread of the investigator finding an inconsistency, along with some tiebacks to a classic Halo commercial.

Fans of the Halo extended universe are familiar with Master Chief’s origins as a six-year old named John that was abducted by the UNSC and turned into a Spartan super soldier. Giraud interviews some of the people from his past, including what sounds like the girl from the Starry Night commercial for Halo 3.

However, it’s when he begins interviewing another person from John-117’s past about some of his exploits that things notably fall apart. No spoilers here, but you can check out the Soundcloud audio log for yourself.
