Russia Ready To Stop Exporting Children To United States

Russian officials at the countries Foreign Ministry have proposed a plan to suspend all adoptions of children to United States citizens following complaints about the welfare of children brought to the United States.

The last time the country had an adoption stop towards the U.S. was in 2010 after a mom in Tennessee simply put her 7-year-old son on a plane back to Russia for acting out. Pinned to the boys pocket was a letter explaining why he was sent back to his homeland. In that letter mother Torry Hansen wrote:

“This child is mentally unstable” and “He is violent and has severe psychopathic issues/behaviors. I was lied to and misled by the Russian orphanage workers and director regarding his mental stability and other issues.”

That stoppage was short lived but led to various discussions about the state of the countries adoption policies and the U.S. ability to monitor those adoptions as needed.

That case is scheduled for a May hearing in which the Russian adoption agency is asking that Hansen pay for the child’s care.

A suspension of Russian children coming into the United States would deal a severe blow to the countries adoption agencies, in the last 20 years more than 50,000 children have been adopted by U.S. parents.

Do you think the actions of a few crazy U.S. citizens should lead to the complete closure of Russian adoptions in the country?
