Watch Chelsea Vs Southampton: League Leaders Look To Extend Lead
Watch the Barclay’s Premier League leaders, Chelsea FC, take on Champions League hopeful’s Southampton in a tasty Sunday morning match up at Stamford Bridge in a live online video provided below.
Chelsea are fresh off a humbling midweek exit in the UEFA Champions League by the hands of 10 man PSG after a 2-2 draw. However, the Blues will be buoyed by Manchester City’s defeat to Burnley. Chelsea are now five points in front despite playing two games less than the Citizens.
Having been blasted as babies after their Champions League exit, Chelsea must find the mental strength to take on a resilient Southampton team adamant of qualifying for Europe. Southampton know that an unprecedented victory away at Chelsea could be the revival needed to reboot their push for Europe.
However, history suggests that Chelsea should bag all three points against Southampton. The Blues have lost just once against Southampton in their last 11 games and are without defeat in the last five games at home to the Saints. Chelsea also boasts the only unbeaten record at home in England.
The corresponding game last year saw Chelsea coming from behind to defeat the Saints 3-1 thanks to goals from Cahill, Terry and Ba after a first-minute strike from English striker Jay Rodriguez.
Although playing 120 minutes against PSG, Chelsea can almost boast a clean bill of health, with Nigerian John Obi-Wan Mike being the only absentee due to injury while Southampton will still be without the unlucky Jay Rodriguez, who is yet to return from a nasty ACL injury suffered from last season.
Southampton had previously held Chelsea to a 1-1 tie at Saint Mary’s Stadium earlier this year in a match that proved to be steep in controversy, as Chelsea were denied a penalty in second half despite replaying suggesting that it was indeed a penalty. Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has since spoken out on numerous occasion of the poor referring in the league.
In typical Mourinho style, the Portuguese has yet again deflected attention from his players’ disappointing performance against Paris Saint Germain to himself, assuring the public that there are few managers in the game today as successful as himself.
“My happiness, first of all, is when I compare myself with the others. I see just a few that are with me in terms of success. And the others? I see a huge difference, a huge distance.”
