Becky Watts: Two Held On Suspicion Of Teen’s Disappearance

Becky Watts, a 16-year-old girl from Bristol, England, was last seen on February 19, 2015. Police have been searching for the missing teen since February 20, coupled with emotional appeals from family members for her safe return. Yet a week and half later, the girl is still missing, but on the suspicion of kidnapping and possible murder, a 21-year-old female and a 28-year-old male were arrested this weekend.

Several homes in Bristol were recently searched in an attempt to find evidence that would help solve the mystery of how and why Becky Watts went missing. Although no details have been released yet as to what was found during the searches, the two suspects were arrested shortly after. Somerset Detective Mike Courtiour states that the case has reached a crucial point, and that sensitive information should be kept private until further details are uncovered, BBC News reports.

“This is a very sensitive investigation and I am not in a position to give you any further information or the identity of those in custody. In the meantime, our search for Becky continues unabated.”

The Guardian reports that Courtiour would not say whether the two people arrested knew Becky or if the properties searched last week belonged to them. Along with Becky’s home in St. George, two other homes, both within five miles of Becky’s residence, were investigated. However, Courtiour did state that police have enough sufficient evidence to arrest the pair for suspicious activities.

On Monday, police received permission from Bristol’s district judge for an official 36-hour hold on the suspects. What this means for authorities is that they have 36 hours to interview and question the suspects. When the allotted time is up, police must either charge the suspects with a crime, release them, or return to the district judge for a time extension.

In addition, a black Vauxhall Zafira may be tied to the suspects, although the information has yet to be confirmed by police. Neighbors in Southmead, an area close to Becky’s home, indicate that the Zafira belongs to a man who appears to be in his 20s, who lives in one of the searched homes with a woman and a young child. Yet, one of the neighbors stated that the family doesn’t socialize with others.

“Nobody really knows who they are. They pretty much kept themselves to themselves. I couldn’t tell you anything about them.”

Meanwhile, the young teen still remains missing. Although two people are being held on suspicion of kidnapping and possible murder, it’s important to note that since no charges have been officially made, Becky Watts may still be alive. Anyone with any information is urged to call the police immediately.
