Tamar Braxton Reveals She Was Heavily Abused By Ex: ‘He Beat Me Physically’

Tamar Braxton has come a long way in her life, and is now happily married to music executive Vince Herman, with whom she shares a 19-month-old son.

Not only has Braxton come a long way in terms of her career, in that she is a very successful Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter in her own right, she has also overcome at least one heavily abusive relationship and moved on with her life.

As the younger sister of Toni Braxton revealed, during a chat segment on this week’s The Real, regarding the previous abusive relationship she was involved in, “God really saved me from myself, because I was with the wrong person, and when I was with the wrong person, it made me feel bad about who I was.”

“He made me feel so bad about having dreams, having goals…and my dreams and goals was not the same as his. And because of that he used to beat me down, mentally and physically. It was just a really hard time for me.”

Us Magazine reports that, as with many people who have been involved in abusive relationships, it’s always great to have hindsight, but at the time one is being abused, they can’t always see what is going on in front of their eyes.

As Tamar Braxton shared, it was more to do with her age and time in life than anything else.

“The only reason why he got away with it then is because I did not know who I was, and I could not make the right decisions for myself because I didn’t know where to go. Yes, I do, and I did, have a real strong family background, but at that time, if you don’t know who you are, you don’t know where to go. That’s why I like to encourage all young ladies — I say it during my shows, I’m gonna say it here — get to know you.”

It is a great thing that Tamar Braxton had the strength to extract herself from that problematic relationship, and move on to marry and have a child later in life. She also serves as an inspiration to other young women in abusive relationships to have the strength to get out, before it’s too late.
