Eva Green Returns, As ‘Penny Dreadful’ Ups The Stakes
Traditionally, a “Penny Dreadful” was a serialized story delivered to readers with each edition costing the reader 1 penny and, modeled after that idea, came the original Showtime series Penny Dreadful, featuring a number of renowned literary characters coming together to fight the forces of evil. The series, debuting in April with such notables as Josh Hartnett and Timothy Dalton, was a success with viewers and with critics, so there was little doubt it would be renewed for a second season. As Penny Dreadful prepares to return, the Season 2 trailer warns viewers to expect more darkness along with their returning favorites, reports Daily Mail.
“When Lucifer fell, he did not fall alone,” warns Vanessa Ives, the character portrayed by Eva Green, at the end of the grueling 2 minute trailer.
Ms. Green, known for a number of films such as Kingdom of Heaven and Casino Royale, will be returning for Season 2 of Penny Dreadful. When Eva isn’t working on Showtime’s Penny Dreadful series, she will be working on Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, a Tim Burton film due for a 2016 release date. When Penny Dreadful does return, viewers can expect to see Eva Green’s character develop a deeper bond with Ethan (Josh Hartnett), as they find themselves on the run together.
While the main concept of uniting to overcome evil will certainly be present in the newest season of Penny Dreadful, subplots will also be present in which Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), the Creature (Rory Kinnear) and Brona (Billie Piper) will each have their own personal battles to fight (and hopefully to win) throughout the season.

It seems obvious that Green’s Penny Dreadful character will have her hands full, if the image of Madame Kali, played by Helen McCrory, bathing in blood is any indication. Already, a series of Season 2 special guests have already been scheduled to appear in episodes of Penny Dreadful, including Patti LuPone, Douglas Hodge, and Sarah Greene, but viewers can also expect returning favorites as well, according to Digital Spy. Harry Treadaway, Danny Sapani, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear, and Billie Piper have all been confirmed to return to for Penny Dreadful‘s new season.
Penny Dreadful‘s producers warn that viewers should not be expecting more of the same, as far as the situations in which the heroes and heroines find themselves. In the first season, the characters had free reign, basically doing as they pleased, but Season 2 of Penny Dreadful will have them driven far outside their comfort zones, forcing them to go on the run and to fend for themselves.
“Last season, our heroes were hunters. This season, they’re hunted… We sort of unleash hell in this season. It’s our make or break season.”
Showtime will premiere Season 2 of Penny Dreadful on April 26.
