Harry Potter-Themed Proposal Almost Ruined By UK Train Cancellations

Samuel Goetsch and his girlfriend Stephanie Dodd, a Harry Potter fan, flew to England for a special proposal when Goetsch’s plans went wrong. Due to the train cancellations across the United Kingdom, Samuel had to make alternate transportation plans to get to the Surbiton train station.

UK Your Local Guardian first reported news of the Harry Potter engagement. Samuel and Stephanie both reside in Houston, Texas. The couple flew to England so Goetsch could propose specifically in the Surbiton station. This station plays an important role in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, the sixth book in the Harry Potter series. Samuel wanted the engagement to take place in a part of the series that talks about new beginnings.

When the trains would not go to Surbiton, Goetsch had to come up with a good reason to use the bus. The couple was staying at the time with Samuel’s father in Surrey, England, who attended the proposal. Samuel’s father spoke with Your Local Guardian about the engagement.

“I don’t think he thought it would be a problem getting to the station but it didn’t go as smoothly as he thought. Stephanie had no idea so my son had to do some quick thinking working up a reason to get her to the station. He had to pretend he had some business in Surbiton and convince her to go with him.”

Stephanie will have a unique experience to look back on.

“This was Stephanie’s first visit to England and it’s great that it’s definitely one she will remember.”

A Surbiton station worker, Caroline Landu, got to witness the Harry Potter proposal firsthand, according to The Daily Mail. Caroline helped the couple capture their special moment on camera.

“It’s not something you see every day so I got them to pose for a photo with the book. I found out they were big Harry Potter fans so it is a romantic thing to do.”

Themed proposals, such as this Harry Potter one, are a special way for fans to celebrate an important occasion. Some fans get highly creative, as covered by the Inquisitr. One developer created a Borderlands-themed video for two fans of the game. Another couple who liked Pokemon hid the rings inside a Pokeball with a special message.
