Chris Rock Divorce From Malaak Compton-Rock Was Reportedly ‘A Long Time Coming’

Chris Rock’s divorce from his wife of 18 years, philanthropist Malaak Compton-Rock, was reportedly “a long time coming,” according to a source who spoke to People magazine on Sunday.

Malaak Compton-Rock, who is also the founder of the nonprofit styleWorks, released a statement on Sunday announcing her divorce from the comedian.

“After much contemplation and 19 years of marriage, Chris and I have decided to go our separate ways. Being fortunate enough to lead a life of service by working with those most vulnerable makes me well aware of life’s blessings, even when faced with difficulties. While recognizing that this is a significant change, my children remain at the center of my life and their well-being is my top priority. It is in this spirit that I sincerely ask that their privacy and the privacy of our family be respected during this transition in our lives.”

And if that official statement wasn’t clear enough, Chris Rock’s attorney, Robert S. Cohen also released a statement to the press confirming the divorce, “Chris Rock has filed for divorce from his wife, Malaak, This is a personal matter and Chris requests privacy as he and Malaak work through this process and focus on their family.”

According to the People magazine source who spoke about the Chris Rock divorce, “This was a long time coming. Chris has known it wasn’t salvageable for a while. He was the one to file because he knew it was time to just move forward already.”

Having wed back in 1996. Rock and his wife live in Alpine, New Jersey with their daughters, Lola Simone, 12, and Zahra Savannah, 10.

Back in 2010 the couple denied rumors that Chris had fathered a child out of wedlock with another woman. And further back in 2007, Chris Rock gushed, in his own way, to reporters about his marriage, saying,

“The best part is just having a partner. There is no real worst part. I’m not going to say there’s a worst part. I mean, I’m a comedian – comedians like to work alone. So maybe I’m not the ideal guy to be married to, in that sense.”

Nevertheless, plenty of water has flowed under the bridge since the good old days for Chris Rock and Malaak Compton-Rock. At least they are parting ways on seemingly amicable terms.
