‘Revenge’: ‘There Has To Be Something Bittersweet’ About The End Of Emily’s Story

Will Emily Thorne survive Revenge? Could the series end with her death? It seems that it could go either way, but it is possible that even if she does live through the series finale, whenever that may be, she’s not going to get a happy ending.

As the Inquisitr previously reported, Revenge is “on the fence” and this could be the show’s final season, so perhaps the question as to Emily’s chances of survival will be answered sooner rather than later.

Entertainment Weekly has pointed out that The Count of Monte Cristo sees the protagonist, Edmond Dantès, live but not with the happy ending he had wanted. Just because that’s the source material doesn’t mean things will end in a similar way for Emily, but based on what showrunner Sunil Nayyar has told EW, Emily is probably not going to get an entirely happy ending, if she gets one at all, on Revenge.

“Regardless of how the story ends, there has to be something bittersweet to it, because of all the losses that have come along the way and because of everything that’s happened. Her appearance in the Hamptons at the beginning of the show has caused a ripple effect that has led to victories and losses that are so epic that I think it will be hard – however it is we choose to end her story – for her to just walk away feeling perfect about everything.”

One such loss is that of Daniel Grayson, who saved Emily in the fall finale. The next Revenge episode, “Epitaph,” will see Victoria find out her son is dead and will include his funeral, as you can see in the promo below.

Josh Bowman will also be in the next Revenge episode, but before you get too excited, it’s only in flashbacks, as he revealed to TVLine.

“I’m actually in a couple of flashbacks in Episode 11. One of those [flashback] scenes was the last thing I shot, and that was very strange to do. I’ve been on this show for four years now, so it was a sad day, but one that I’m going to take with me always.”

Whether or not Emily will join Daniel on the list of those who lost their lives because of her quest for revenge has yet to be seen – and determined, according to what Nayyar told EW, and he also pointed to the Confucius proverb, “Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.”

“Whether she lives or dies, honestly we don’t know yet. That is such a moving thesis for the show, because there is such loss that comes with this journey. What’s interesting to me about how she would finish this journey is what sense of victory does she take and who does she get to walk away with, if she walks away at all?”

Revenge season 4 airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
