Sigourney Weaver To Return To ‘Avatar’ Amid Hopes For An ‘Aliens’ Sequel

Sigourney Weaver’s Q&A was one of the high points of the fifth annual Hero Complex Film Festival held at the TCL Chinese 6 Theatre in Hollywood, particularly for fans of the Alien films. She addressed a long held hope of fans, with Weaver adding own ideas about the possibility of a fifth and final installment in the successful film franchise. There seemed to be some regret in Sigourney Weaver’s words, as she confessed that she felt her character’s story had been left incomplete.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Weaver took some time to reminisce about the filming of the Alien films with convention attendees, sharing with them some of her fondest behind-the-scenes memories. Returning to the possibility of a final sequel, Sigourney Weaver remarked that the character of Ripley had been evolving throughout the films, and that Ripley had been abandoned mid-stride, when there was no conclusion to the series.

“Had we done a fifth one, I don’t doubt that her humanity would have prevailed… I do feel like there is more story to tell.”

Sigourney Weaver also remarked upon the possible storyline of a new sequel, joking that it might not be best to have the story taking place on Earth with the alien “popping out of a haystack” somewhere in the “French countryside.” Weaver seemed very open to the idea of returning to her role as Ripley, and she seemed more than willing to give the fans the ending to the story they seem to want.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that James Cameron, in conjunction with 20th Century Fox, have arranged to bring Sigourney Weaver back to the Avatar films, setting her to return in the next three sequels, even though Weaver’s character in the first film, Grace Augustine, did, in fact, die, before the conclusion of that film. Regardless, Cameron was determined to bring Sigourney Weaver in on the forthcoming films.

“Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made ‘Aliens.’ We’re good friends who’ve always worked well together,so it just feels right that she’s coming back for the ‘Avatar’ sequels. Her character of Grace Augustine, as fans know, died in the first movie, so she’s playing a different and in many ways more challenging character in the upcoming films. We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration.”

Also returning to the much anticipated films will be Weaver’s co-stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Lang.

Building suspense and possibly revealing spoilers, Sigourney Weaver revealed that, although the possibility had been denied by James Cameron himself in earlier interviews, Weaver’s former character, Grace Augustine, would in fact be returning to the story, though Sigourney would not reveal details of how this would be accomplished within the story. Weaver has alluded to a change or a transformation of her character.

“I can’t talk about it, but my part is a little different in each one. I’ll transform somewhat.”

The sequels will be filmed back-to-back, and will be released in consecutive years, according to a story reported by the Hollywood Reporter. Sigourney Weaver also commented on the excitement she feels about filming all three films so closely together. Sigourney commented that having the experiences of Peter Jackson’s filming schedules from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies to draw from was comforting.

The first sequel to hit theaters will arrive on December 2016, with each new film arriving in theaters in time for their ensuing December releases. Currently, Sigourney Weaver’s latest film, Exodus: Gods and Kings, is showing in theaters.
