American Idol is getting the great big cut. Instead of having two nights in the week for the show, FOX has decided to cut the upcoming season down to one night a week. According to the Hollywood Reporter , this means the results show will be cut.

So what does this mean for the contestants? Seacrest revealed the news at the Jingle Ball concert in New York City.

“There won’t be a ‘wait ’til tomorrow night.’ There won’t be a ‘Coming up, coming up, coming up.’ We are going to put it all into one format in one night. So that will be exciting.”

For those who have watched American Idol , the writing was practically on the wall. Last season American Idol’s results show was cut down to 30 minutes. This is an indication of its ratings. Over the last few years, even the most avid of American Idol watchers have discussed how the show is past its prime, and it’s been down in the ratings over the last several years.

As for when this will go into effect, Seacrest said it will happen after the audition rounds.

“[It will be] one night when we get to the final stage, the top ten, there will be one night of performances and results all in one night.”

As for the judges Keith Urban, Harry Connick Jr. and Jennifer Lopez, Seacrest said this season has made room for the three to get better acquainted with the new batch of talent.

“They found some amazing contestants, and they had a chance to get to know them a little bit better.”

As for what could come with the new season, Seacrest mentioned that old contestants who have found success away from the show might be able to come back, not as performers, but as mentors to the current contestants.

“Now that we’ve been on for such a long time, you’ve got mentors in these Idols and they come back with some real experience to talk about.”

Past contestant Adam Lambert stepped in for Keith Urban at the last minute, and according to Ryan, he was instrumental.

“Adam stepped up when Keith couldn’t be there, and Adam did a great job.”

The next season of American Idol will air on FOX starting January 7.
