Carla Bruni, Nicolas Sarkozy Welcome Baby Girl

French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his supermodel wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy are proud parents, having welcomed the birth of their new daughter on Wednesday, according to BFM TV, a French television station.

The baby, reportedly born between 7:00 and 7:30pm local time at the Muette Clinic in Paris, marks the first birth for a French incumbent head of state since Empress Eugenie had Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte 155 years ago.

Reports say Mr. Sarkozy had been at the clinic earlier in the day, but stayed for only about a half-hour before being forced to jet off to Germany for crisis talks on the eurozone sovereign debt crisis before the birth itself. Following a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel, Sarkozy left Frankfurt just before the birth was announced, the French newspaper Le Figaro reported.

The baby’s privacy will be jealously guarded, it seems.

Speaking to reporters during a trip to the town of Mayenne in France, Sarkozy vocalized his intentions on keeping the baby’s arrival a private matter.

“All of you who are parents can understand the very deep joy that Carla and I feel. Each one of you can also understand that it’s an even deeper joy because it is private,” Daily Mail quoted Sarkozy as saying. “We have been lucky to have a very happy event take place. I will just keep to these few brief words to say to you that they are doing very well.”

The new baby girl marks the second child for Carla Bruni, who also has a 10-year-old son, Aurelien, with former partner Rafael Enthoven.

Sarkozy too has two sons, from his first marriage to Marie-Dominique Culioli, and a third, from his second wife Cecilia Ciganer-Albeniz
