Nude Bra Designs Are Racist Because They’re White? Nubian Skin Comes To The Rescue
Nude bra designs are racist because they’re white, and the color of a non-white person’s skin isn’t that color when they’re nude. That’s the opinion of an article published by the Oklahoma Daily, the official newspaper of the University of Oklahoma. At least one company, Nubian Skin, feels the same way, and they’re releasing products that will attempt to make women feel differently about nude bras.
In a related report by The Inquisitr, a new study looked into whether wearing a bra will increase your risk of breast cancer.
“How would it make you feel that the fashion industry and society at large has based its ideal of nude on Caucasian people? That the color of your skin doesn’t count as ‘nude’?” asks the staff editorial of the Oklahoma Daily.
The article then goes on to claim that naming a bra nude is one of the “subtle examples of racism,” which is a “microaggression” that’s supposedly mind-washing American women all over the country. The writers “encourage all of our readers to think critically about the small instances of racial bias they encounter each and every day.” But they go a little bit further than just nude bra designs, suggesting that nude-colored makeup, “flesh-colored” clothing, and even Band-Aids are examples of subtle racism in the United States.
While that politically loaded concept is sure to be controversial, Nubian Skin believes there is something to the suggestion that nude bra designs shouldn’t be only white in tone. Their products are not just targeted at African-American women — they’re targeting multiple shades ranging from toned to black.
“A nude bra, skin-tone tights / pantyhose – basics of every woman’s wardrobe In theory… It’s the grand debate, what do I wear under a white or sheer blouse? What colour hosiery will go with these amazing shoes? Black just isn’t going to work. The simple answer is nude. But my nude isn’t the nude I see in shops. Despite the reality that women of colour have the same needs as all women when it comes to lingerie and hosiery (and spend the same of their hard-earned money), the industry simply doesn’t cater to us. So, I thought, it’s time to rethink the definition of nude. Thus, Nubian Skin was born.”
What do you think about the idea that nude bra designs are implicitly racist based upon the name?
