Teen Drowns Taking ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Over the last few weeks, the internet has been awash with clips of people taking part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

Each splash of ice-cold water on people’s heads has helped to raise money for a number of charities, including ALS who have reportedly made close to $100 million because of the viral campaign.

However, tragedy struck one participant over the weekend, after it emerged that an 18-year-old teenager in Scotland died Sunday while taking part in the ice bucket challenge.

Cameron Lancaster’s death has been linked to the online sensation after his body was found at Preston Hill Quarry in Inverkeithing, Fife.

It’s believed that the disused quarry has been the location for numerous people that have conducted the craze, which has seen the likes of Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, and Cristiano Ronaldo take part. Emergency services were called to the quarry Sunday evening at around 5 p.m., and they then, unfortunately, discovered his body about four hours later.

Police have now confirmed they are now conducting investigations into whether Lancaster was trying to add his name to the millions of others who have poured ice cold water over their heads to raise money for charity.

Alice McGarry, a police controller who was one of the first people to arrive on the scene, confirmed early rumors and speculation have suggested Cameron was taking part in the challenge.

“This is an awful tragedy,” she declared, according to the Daily Star. “Our thoughts are with the boy’s family. I think that goes without saying. There are rumors and speculation that this tragedy is linked to the ice bucket challenge.”

McGarry then explained: “Some children have been jumping off the cliffs at the quarry. They have always done that, but it seems there has been a recent increase because of this challenge.”

A police spokesman then added, “Inquires are under way to establish the full circumstances of what happened and Police Scotland’s thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time.”

The family released a statement after Cameron’s death was confirmed which read: “Cameron died in a tragic accident. His death is such a great loss. During his short life, he touched so many people with his friendliness, kindness and thoughtful generosity of spirit. He will be hugely missed by his family and friends. The family are finding it hard to come to terms with this sudden loss and would ask for privacy at this sad time.”
