Has Teen Mom 2 ‘s Leah Messer been using drugs to help cope with her stress?

The Teen Mom 2 star recently cried to her husband on episode about a prescription from her doctor, saying that the medicine made her feel “messed up,” but a few of her friends are saying that Messer has been using drugs – specifically painkillers like Lortab and Percocet – for quite some time, and without a doctor’s prescription.

According to her friend’s exclusive interview with Radar Online , Messer has been using the drugs to help cope with the strain, emotionally and financially, of raising a child with a disability. Aliannah Simms, one of her twin daughters she has with ex Corey Simms, has an incurable form of muscular dystrophy . Messer says that insurance does not cover all the costs associated with her little girl’s illness, and that one medical bill alone was $20,000.

Her friend, who remained anonymous, claims that “It’s all too much for her” and that Messer sometimes simply “drops her girls off with her mom at night and takes painkillers or drinks heavily.” According to the friend, Dawn, Messer’s mother, enables Messer’s behavior by helping her out with the girls and keeping her secret.

Her friends, however, confess concern that the stress is just too much for the young mom, and they are worried about her behavior and her health.

Messer had been concerned with daughter Aliannah’s delayed development for several years, but it wasn’t until her daughter was four that the family finally got the answers they had been seeking, from an Ohio neuromuscular specialist, Dr. Tsao. Aliannah’s particular type of muscular dystrophy is rare – with less than 20 confirmed cases – but the specific mutation Messer’s daughter has does affect the heart and the respiratory system. Eventually, the little girl will be confined full-time to a wheelchair. As far as long-term prognosis goes, however, no one seems quite certain, simply because the specific mutation of the disease that Aliannah has is incredibly rare.

Leah Messer originally debuted on the series 16 and Pregnant , but became popular with the premiere of Teen Mom 2 in 2011. A former high school cheerleader from West Virginia, Messer became pregnant with her twins by her then-boyfriend Corey Simms. The two had a tumultuous relationship, but did get married shortly after their twin girls turned one. However, the marriage ended in divorce, although the two remain close due to their mutual concern and love for their daughters. Messer began dating Jeremy Calvert in 2012 and, after suffering a miscarriage , the two added a daughter to their family in 2013.
