Ed Sheeran Says New Album Is Filled With Ups And Downs

Ed Sheeran’s new album isn’t stacked from top to bottom with just one kind of song. In fact, the acclaimed singer said fans should expect some highs and a few lows.

Instead of manufacturing songs out of thin air, Sheeran reportedly used the experiences from the last three years of his life as inspiration for X. Ed’s second full-length record should arrive later this month. When fans finally pop the songs into their stereos, they’ll essentially get to see the world through Sheeran’s eyes.

During his recent conversation with BBC News, Sheeran explained how the time he spent roaming through the United States inspired the tunes on his new album. Since his life was filled with highs and lows, this ultimately came through in his work.

“Some [songs] are very positive, some are very negative, some of them are about different things. I also had the opportunity to work with some really interesting people, like writing a song to perform with Rudimental,” Ed Sheeran explained.

He continued, “The first proper session I had with [Pharrell Williams] in the studio, he was at number one with ‘Get Lucky’ and I said, ‘Have you got somewhere more important to be?’ But he’s very good at knocking compliments back and is just such a humble guy.”

In addition to putting together material for X, Sheeran spent some time penning tunes for the director Josh Boone’s adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars. Since the book and the movie are incredibly emotional experiences, Sheeran knew he needed to inject that kind of feeling into his contribution to the soundtrack.

“Life-changing experiences and life-changing love, they happen rarely, but when they do happen, it puts everything into perspective,” Sheeran explained during a behind-the-scenes featurette entitled “Music Behind Our Stars.” Have a look at the clip below.

As if all this stuff wasn’t enough to keep Ed Sheeran busy for quite some time, the singer is also teaming up with a handful of other recording artists. Not only did he pen a track for Hilary Duff’s upcoming album, he’s also joining forces with Demi Lovato. Not surprisingly, she’s thoroughly pumped to work with the guy in the studio.

“He’s just so talented so I’m really excited to work with him. He was supposed to be here this week, so we were gonna write. And now he’s not, so we’re trying to figure out a time when we can write together,” Lovato recently told Capital FM.

Ed Sheeran’s new album X arrives on June 23.
