‘Under The Dome’: Can The Series Last 15 Seasons?

After a successful first season, Under the Dome will return to CBS on June 30 at 10 pm with the premiere episode, “Heads Will Roll,” written by author Stephen King.

What was originally supposed to be a limited “event” series could last a lot longer than expected, said executive producer Neal Baer during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Baer mentioned that Under the Dome is “way past” the King novel on which it is based.

“The book is about the first week, and we’re already two weeks in,” he said. “This season will be going two more weeks.”

Baer added that if the show “lasted 15 years,” that would be the equivalent of “a year under the dome.”

“It’s certainly possible to keep going,” he said. “We have so many stories to tell.”

If Under the Dome did last for 15 years, it would be the same amount as NBC’s long-running medical drama, ER, another show in which Baer served as producer.

Speaking of stories, the executive producer brought up the fact that there will be “transformation” this year on Under the Dome.

“Last year was a season of secrets, this is the year we find out what they’re truly made of,” he said.

Baer added that two characters will get killed off in the first few episodes, but there is a possibility that they may come back.

“Anything is possible under the dome,” he said.

Baer also mentioned how much he enjoyed having King pen the first episode of the new season of Under the Dome.

“Stephen King is sending us off into a place we’re proud of and we really love and [these are some of] his ideas to go beyond the book,” he stressed.

Unfortunately, there will be one person missing from the roster when Under the Dome returns. Creator Brian K. Vaughn said in an interview with Bleeding Cool that he will not be back for season two, noting that he has “two very young kids at home,” and he never got the chance to see them last year.

“I’m already missing the cast and crew, but the show remains in the excellent hands of our veteran showrunner, Neal Baer, and we were lucky enough to hire some heavy hitting new writers for this season, including none other than Mr. King himself,” Vaughn added.

Vaughn also mentioned that the season two premiere of Under the Dome is “easily the best” episode so far, and King “helps set the tone for a f***ing crazy new direction.”

“I look forward to getting to watch as a fan with everyone else,” Vaughn said.
