Official Trailer For ‘The Giver’ Delivers Delicious Dystopian Despair
The first official trailer for The Giver, the adaptation of Lois Lowry’s award-winning children’s novel of the same name, has hit the Web and one thing is sure: The Giver delivers!
The film, starring Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Brenton Thwaites and Jeff Bridges as the eponymous Giver of Memory, tells the tale of a seemingly utopian society where harmony means conformity and all past conflict has been whitewashed, save for the one man entrusted with safeguarding society’s memory. Everyone has a role to play; Jonas, Thwaites’s role, is chosen as the Receiver of Memory and comes under the tutelage of the title character.
“Hey, let’s show an adolescent boy that the perfect world he knows is a facade. But just him. What could go wrong?”
The Giver nabbed Lowry the 1994 Newbery Medal, given to “the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children” by the American Library Service. The film is set for release on August 15 and this 86-second trailer gives just enough to keep us wanting more.
