World’s Tallest Statue In India To Be Twice The Size Of The Statue Of Liberty

The world’s tallest statue will soon begin construction India.

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, the world’s tallest building is in China, although it apparently has scary elevator problems.

India is naming the world’s tallest statue the “Statue of Unity” in honor of Sadar Patel, the first home minister of an India independent from England. Narendra Modi says the world’s tallest statue will be built from melted-down metal from around the nation:

“I want iron pieces from your villages. But we do not want any piece of iron, we want pieces of iron from tools which a farmer has used in farming.”

The world’s tallest statue is projected to be 600 feet tall and rest on a rocky river island in the state of Gujarat. As a comparison, this makes the State of Unity twice as a tall as the United State’s State of Liberty and four times higher than the state of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro.

But the Statue of Unity is already doing more dividing of India’s people than unifying. The construction of the world’s tallest statue will require $300 million dollars, or 25 billion Indian rupees, in order to pay Turner Construction, the same company who built the former world’s tallest building in Dubai. Critics claim the statue is an unnecessary cost in a nation where one-third of the 1.2 billion Indian people live in poverty. The statue will be financed by the Gujarat government although much of it will be through public donations in the form of metal and money.

The idea for building the world’s tallest statue is also supposedly being supported by Narendra Modi as a subtle dig at India’s modern-day Gandhi political dynasty. Sadar Patel was from the Gujarat state while India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, is the ancestor of leaders in political parties opposed to Narendra Modi.
