Real Lightsaber For Sale? History Of Replica Star Wars Weapon

A Real lightsaber for sale? The possibility of a real lightsaber has captured the popular imagination since the release of the Star Wars movies in 1977 and now, apparently, that possibility has moved that little bit closer to reality.

As recently reported by The Inquisitr, news of a real lightsaber has taken an even more fascinating turn when physicists discovered photon molecules could legitimately be used in a real lightsaber fashion.

But fans, geeks, and companies alike have long been trying to work out the kinks of how to create a real lightsaber. Lasers provide their own set of difficulties with the easy deflection of any laser powered beam, energy/portability conflicts, visibility of the lasers and most importantly, special effects.

So far the only possibilities of a real lightsaber for sale has been less than impressive and predictably “toy like.” Alternatively, some real lightsaber products are so dangerous they really aren’t very much fun, with offerings from Ultra Sabers, LaserSabers, and so on. These typically feature a metal blade with integrated noise and light effects, or in the case of LaserSabers, are real lasers. Unfortunately for LaserSabers, if you so much as shine their S3 Arctic “lasersaber” in someone else’s eye, you’re quite probably going to blind them. While I’m sure enthusiasts are eager for the next breakthrough, I can’t think of many people willing to go to those lengths in the name of “fun”. On the other hand, the S3 has promise for use in a laser-rifle type of application and let’s just admit it now, that is still cool and would make for many a happy fan (even if they have to get a weapons permit first).

Also, on the subject of weapons-like “real lightsaber” a defense technology company has also produced what some claim is the closest thing yet to a real lightsaber with their Metal Vapor Torch. Geekdom should be aware, however, that these claims may be exaggerated and some are calling it more of a “burning pocket knife” than a real lightsaber for sale. With cost for the MVT projected at about $135 it is still a wicked cool gadget. Once you get approved for purchase, that is.

Though the breakthrough with photon molecules has no doubt excited the Geek Fandom (this geek included), the reality is that a real lightsaber for sale is a long way off. You’ll be more likely to see the technology in your computer before you can swish it around dramatically in your next epic lightsaber duel.

What do you think of the possibilities for seeing a real lightsaber for sale any time soon?
