Halladay throws a perfect game

27 Florida Marlins players came to bat against Roy Halladay on Saturday, May 29th and 27 Marlins went down in order. Yes, baseball fans that means Roy Halladay threw just the 20th perfect game in MLB history, and the second one in the 2010 season. It was the 155 career win for the Phillies ace in his illustrious 13 year career. This will probably go down as one of the best 1-0games in the history of the league. For the Phillies, who had dealt for him this past off season, and dealt away Cliff Lee last season at the trade deadline, it looks like they picked the right guy to go with.

In 11 starts for the Phillies this season Halladay has an 6-3 record with a 2.22 ERA. He has also fanned 59 hitters while issuing just 12 walks. Those numbers are impressive all on their own, and he was off to a great season before hurling Saturday’s gem. Lee on the other hand is off to a 3-2 start with a 3.22 ERA with 42 strike outs and three walks with the struggling Seattle Mariners. With the perfect game Halladay joins Jim Bunning as the only two Phillies pitchers to have a perfect game on their pitching resumes.

Of course a perfect game does not come threw pitching alone. Halladay’s teammates came up big behind him as Wilson Valdez made a great play on a chopper of the end of the bat by the speedy Cameron Maybin. He fielded the ball nicely and made a bang bang play to get the speedster at first. In the eight inning Juan Castro made a nice dig on a shot hop throw from Jorge Cantu to help preserve the perfection.
