Female Kicker Tryout: Lauren Silberman Set For Scouting Combine
Female kicker Lauren Silberman is all set for her official NFL tryout.
The 28-year-old is scheduled to kick at the New York Jets’ training facility in New Jersey on Sunday. Silberman will be the first female in history to tryout for the NFL.
According to ABC News, the female kicker said it was her “lifelong dream” to tryout for the NFL. Silberman said she is hoping she can impress the scouts who will be in attendance.
The University of Wisconsin and Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate played soccer during her college days. In order to prepare for her shot at becoming an NFL kicker, Lauren Silberman said she recently started practicing long-range field goals.
She told The Associated Press:
“I am working hard to prepare but I am also realistic about my chances. I hope my willingness to put myself out there inspires others to seize opportunities and challenges. The support from around the world has been so heartening.”
Sports agent Rob Roche said the odds are stacked against the female kicker during her tryout. Since she never played football in college, Roche said Silberman may not be able to handle the pressure during the game.
“To come out and start kicking and you’ve never kicked in college you don’t know how a player is going to react under pressure when the game’s on the line and you’re kicking in Denver in the snow and it’s overtime.”
Although she’s never played football, the NFL hopeful is banking on her experience with sports video games to help her through the rough patches.
She told ABC News:
“I’m hoping through all of this virtual play that I’ve done that it will extend to performing well physically on the field.”
