Victoria Azarenka Wins Australian Open

Victoria Azarenka won her second consecutive Australian Open title today after a grueling match against Li Na.

The match, which included fireworks and a couple of medical timeouts, ended 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Azarenka’s title win comes a day after a controversial victory over teenager Sloane Stephens. Azarenka used a questionable injury timeout to ice her opponent during the match. The world’s No.1 golfer received a lot of criticism but she was able to win over the crowd by the end of the title match.

Azarenka said:

“I feel really happy right now. It’s been a long match. It’s been a tough match. Li Na was absolutely playing great tennis. Unfortunate things that happened to her, you know, but that’s sport. I’m just happy that everything I went through, you know, I still could manage to give my best and really come out there and try to focus on my game and play tennis that I can produce.”

Azarenka may have been the one holding the trophy at the end of the match but Li Na was the one who truly won over the crowd. A sprained her ankle during the fifth game of the second set. Later in the match, she fell and hit her head against the court. Na also had to deal with fireworks from the nearby Australia Day celebrations.

Still, Na was able to make Azarenka work for the Australian Open title.

Na said:

“I can hear a lot of Chinese fans; also I can see many Chinese flags. It looks like China Open! … Without falling down, I was feeling pretty good. But I think in important games she play better than me, so that’s why she can win the title.”
