NBA Rumors: New York Knicks Committing To Derrick Rose Long-Term

Is it true that New York Knicks have filled their void at the point guard position? Derrick Rose seems be a fit with the Knicks for the long haul. The Knicks are reportedly considering offering Rose a contract extension. He could be the long-term answer at lead guard for the New York Knicks when it is all said and done.

When the New York Knicks first acquired (courtesy of CBS Sports) Derrick Rose from the Chicago Bulls over the summer, expectations were high. With Rose, the Knicks received a one-time NBA MVP. While he was three times removed from major knee injuries, Rose started to show glimpses of his exceptional play of the past.

All of Derrick Rose’s statistical numbers from this season are nearly identical to his last season with the Bulls, but there are two differences. Rose is still learning the offense that the Knicks are running.

Playing with Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis is a lot different than teaming up with Jimmy Butler and Pau Gasol, as Rose did last season. Anthony plays with the ball and oftentimes will shoot off the dribble. Porzingis is an inside-outside player as a scorer.

With the Bulls, Butler needed the basketball to be effective, but he is not a volume shooter the way Carmelo Anthony is for the Knicks. Gasol’s game is similar to that of Porzingis, except that the latter is much more agile. Rose still has to adjust. He was just trying to play as many games during his final season with Bulls as he could. Rose played cautiously throughout most of the year.

In the coming weeks fans of the New York Knicks will see a more aggressive Derrick Rose. There were traces of aggressive play from Rose when he scored 30 points in a Knicks loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Knicks trading for Rose was considered a risk at the time. Ken Berger of CBS Sports believed that the trade was one worth making for New York.

“Rose may not be the point guard he once was, but there will be no question who the Knicks’ floor leader will be next season — as long as Rose can stay healthy. He’s managed to play more than 51 games only once in the past four seasons. That was last season, when his production dipped to barely above replacement level.”

The New York Knicks gets a former NBA MVP on the last year of his deal. Derrick Rose is motivated. He still believes that he can return to his professional peak. Seeing the potential of another long-term deal on the horizon, there is plenty of incentive for him to be at his best with the Knicks.

Rose keeps improving and finding his niche with the Knicks. The timing is perfect. According to ESPN, the New York Knicks are able to start negotiating with the former Bulls’ star for a three-year contract extension beginning December 22. Doing so would signal that the Knicks view him as a long-term solution to point guard.

The New York Knicks can offer Derrick Rose up to a 7.5 percent pay increase with the three-year extension. According to the New York Post, that would equate to a $75 million deal over three seasons.

Before the Knicks were slated to play the Oklahoma City Thunder, Derrick Rose admitted that he had not spoken to the team about a contract extension. He did sound receptive to the idea of staying with the New York Knicks long-term.

“I haven’t talked to them about it. It’s been more about winning games. We’ll see. I’m more concerned with trying to win games, but it’s something I’d have to talk about with my family and team.”

Derrick Rose talking about staying healthy and preaching about winning being a priority is a good sign. If the Knicks can get back to the playoffs and Rose can avoid injuries, it will look favorably on him.

The New York Knicks are expected to be in the hunt for a playoff spot. If Rose can continue to gel with his new Knicks’ teammates, the postseason will become a reality. So far, with only about 20 percent of the NBA season in the books, Rose has earned the right to be considered for a contract extension.
