Why Bill Goldberg Got Over When New WWE Talent Can’t, According To Jim Cornette

The Bill Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar match from Survivor Series is in the books, and with a main event as shocking as it was short, it was clear leaving Toronto Sunday night that the former WCW World Heavyweight Champion is more over with fans than he ever was.

For wrestling legend Jim Cornette, there is a very simple reason for this, and it also happens to be the reason none of the current WWE talent has been able to achieve the same success.

Cornette appeared on the most recent episode of the MLW Radio podcast to discuss his theory, and as always, the outspoken veteran wrestling manager had a colorful way of putting it.

For starters, Cornette actually approved of the 86-second squash match, though it was an approval that came with a few caveats.

Speaking to hosts Court Bauer and Mister Saint-Laurent, he said he understood the decision WWE made to put Bill Goldberg over Lesnar in such a convincing fashion, and that it was the right thing to do for getting over a match that could have been clunky in a longer format.

However, he felt it spoke to the current state of WWE’s booking that the “most over guy on the card” was a 49-year-old man, agreeing with Bauer and MSL that Bill Goldberg’s promos leading into the Survivor Series match were well crafted and executed, “but that’s because he doesn’t give a f***,” he explained, “because he doesn’t have to.”

“That’s the way a star needs to feel about what he does,” Jim Cornette continued, “instead of worrying about whether he’s gonna get fired if he says ‘prick’ or does the wrong thing.”

It is the wrestling legend’s belief that current WWE talent is unable to get over with the fanbase because they are too belabored to overly scripted wrestling promos and a company culture that chokes out any opportunity to push boundaries in a way that fans would embrace.

Cornette never worked with Bill Goldberg and was never a big fan of his work, but he did work in front of and behind the camera with WWE and was one of the people over Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) developmental when Brock Lesnar came into the company.

His criticisms of WWE and of the state of professional wrestling in general are many, so any commendation of the Brock Lesnar and Bill Goldberg match was always going to come with its share of criticisms.

In this case, Bauer and MSL agreed.

Bauer calls guys like Bill Goldberg “band-aids,” who can draw big money at shows where they are prominently featured, but who do nothing to create new stars.

While the rest of the performers are better at putting on good matches, MSL said, the angles have essentially been so poorly booked that none of the newer guys are able to get over.

“It really speaks to the problem in WWE today that Bill Goldberg is the best promo and the best babyface in the company,” he said.

As for where Bill Goldberg and Brock Lesnar go from here, the trio agreed that Brock would likely show up at Royal Rumble to cost Goldberg the match and set up a third match at WrestleMania 33.

“It just makes sense that you would have the possibility of Bill Goldberg going 3-0 at WrestleMania 33 against Lesnar,” Bauer said.

Still, MSL interjected, where’s the drama in a trilogy where one guy has already beaten the other one twice?

What do you think, readers?
