Johan Santana done for the year

The Mets disabled list is starting to look like a All Star Game lineup card. Already struggling through so many injuries the Mets got more bad news Tuesday night when they had to sit down pitcher Johan Santana for the rest of the year due to bone chips is is throwing elbow. To say this season has been miserable for the Mets and their fans is quite and understatement. No other first year in a new stadium has gone as badly as the Mets this year at Citi Field.

The good news is Santana should be ready for the start of next season. Surgery of this kind usually takes 4-5 months to recover from. What condition he will be when he comes back remains to be seen, but at this point it the Mets can be sure that he will be back.

While it is likely Santana has had this injury for sometime his record so far this year didn’t really reveal he was having serious problems. He will end the 2009 season with a 13-9 record, and 3.13 ERA. That is not so bad on a team that has struggled severely throughout the 2009 campaign.

However given that he started the 2009 season on a tear going 7-2, with a 1.77 ERA over thee first two months of the season. Since the beginning of June Santana has gone just 6-7 with a 4.02 ERA. Which seems to indicate their was some kind of a problem.
