NFL Rumors: Tony Romo Injury Scares Dallas Cowboys

An entire NFL season can be flipped upside down by a single injury. According to ESPN, Tony Romo suffered a back injury during the preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. The veteran quarterback never returned to the field, but the Dallas Cowboys are saying that he is going to be just fine.

During the first quarter of the game, the Dallas Cowboys called a passing play. Tony Romo took a couple of steps backwards but ended up being sacked by Seattle Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril, one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. Romo immediately clutched his lower back.

Those follow the Dallas Cowboys closely know that Tony Romo has a history of injuries, including those that have affected his lower back. The 36- year-old has missed quite a few games because of his lower back. The Cowboys certainly do not want to go without their franchise quarterback again.

After being checked out on the sidelines, Tony Romo wanted to get back into the game, as the third preseason game is where NFL starters receive their most playing time before the regular season starts. Romo pleaded with the coaching staff, but his request to be put back into the game was denied.

During the second half of the game, Tony Romo stayed in the locker room instead of getting back out on the field. That led to speculation that he was receiving some X-rays in the back. However, the Dallas Cowboys have publicly stated that none were taken. Romo simply stayed away from the field.

It makes it a bit easier for the Dallas Cowboys to keep Tony Romo on the sidelines because head coach Jason Garrett and the coaching staff have been wanting to see more of Dak Prescott, the quarterback that they drafted in the fourth round this summer.

Dak Prescott has captured the imagination of the Dallas Cowboys fan base by looking extremely impressive during preseason. Prescott has shown enough potential and promise that Cowboys fans believe that they have someone that can eventually take over for Tony Romo as the franchise quarterback of the future.

As good as Dak Prescott is, the Dallas Cowboys do not want him to become the starter any time soon. They have a small window of opportunity to get back to the Super Bowl with the way that the roster has been constructed. Tony Romo has to be the guy leading the charge for that to happen.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was not shy about how he felt when he saw Tony Romo going down with a back injury. Jones revealed that he even said a prayer when he saw that Romo stayed on the ground after the sack from Cliff Avril. Jones knows that he needs Romo if he wants to get back to the Super Bowl.

The Dallas Cowboys have one final preseason game on September 1 against the Houston Texans. Normally, NFL teams do not play their starters in the fourth and final preseason game. That is usually when the fringe players fight for roster spots.

There is a very good chance that Dallas Cowboys fans will not get to see Tony Romo on the field again until the start of the regular season. On September 11, the Cowboys will be playing against NFC East rival New York Giants. Romo has a lot of experience, so he should be ready to go by then.

Tony Romo gave the Dallas Cowboys a bit of a scare. However, from all reports, it appears that he is fine and should be able to start at quarterback when the meaningful games begin.
