Manchester United

After being witness to a relatively poor stretch of campaigns for Manchester United under the successive leaderships of David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal, United fans are finally beginning to believe that Jose Mourinho’s appointment as the manager could usher in a new era at Old Trafford.

The first glimpse of the things to come was provided in United’s first match against Bournemouth, with new signings Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Eric Bailly all giving a good account of themselves. Ibrahimovic particularly has been in sensational form as he continues to rack up the goals in United colors, and Mourinho will hope that his age does not become a factor as the Premier League enters its more grilling stages later in the year.

For the moment, however, all eyes will be on Pogba as he makes his return debut for the club where he started his career, but because of a lack of opportunities under then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson, he left as a free agent to join Italian juggernauts Juventus in 2012. He has since established himself as one of the best central midfielders in the game, and while critics have argued that his price tag of £89 million ($116 million) is bloated, Jose Mourinho, or indeed his team, will not be much bothered by that.

Speaking before the first home game of the season for Manchester United, Mourinho insisted that fans will be a big factor if United are to win the Premier League this season, saying that the “fear factor” needs to be brought back to the Old Trafford, reports DNA.

“Not me, but the team, yes… The fans also help. Everything starts there: the relationship between team and fans.

“If there’s a connection then the factor of being really strong at home has to come back. The way we play (helps) and if the fans play (their part) there’ll be no chance for the opponent.”

Apart from Pogba, United defender Chris Smalling will also return from suspension to feature against Southampton, while Mourinho confirmed that Jesse Lingard, who was not in the squad at Bournemouth, is free of injury, according to Sky Sports.

Southampton

Southampton’s fans are themselves adjusting to life under new manager Claude Puel, who took over the reins at the club after Ronald Koeman decided to make his way to Everton. The Saints have made shrewd acquisitions in the summer by bringing in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Nathan Redmond, who could make history at Old Trafford by becoming the first player to score in the first two matches of consecutive Premier League seasons.

Southampton drew their first game of the season with Watford, who led in the game by an Etienne Capoue goal before Redmond scored in the second half to finish the tie 1-1. The Saints will be boosted by their recent record at Old Trafford, having won two and drawn one of their last three games against Manchester United. Manchester City remains the only club to have won three consecutive away matches at Old Trafford in the Premier League era, and while it will be a tough ask for Southampton to replicate that record, Claude Puel will hope to make the most of the opportunity.

Speaking before the game, Puel quashed rumors suggesting center back Jose Fonte might be on his way out of the club, saying the Portuguese international remains fully focused on his job at Southampton, reports the International Business Times.

“There is no problem with Jose [Fonte], it is just strange that this rumour comes just before the game at United. There is a possibility that he may travel with us to Old Trafford.”
