AVG decides iTunes is the Small.BOG virus

itunes-virus

Users of popular free Windows anti-virus software AVG have been in for a surprise in the last 24 hours after the software started identifying iTunes files as a virus.

According to warning messages received by AVG users, iTunes.dll and iTunesRegistry.dll are infected with “Trojan horse Small.BOG”. The odd thing about the alleged virus is that at least according to the databases of other leading virus scanners, there’s no trojan in existence called Small.BOG…so it’s quite possible that someone at AVG is taking the piss.

AVG, Apple and other forums have been swamped by users experiencing the problem. At the time of writing there doesn’t appear to be any official word from AVG on when it might be rectified.

In the mean time, if you do receive the message, the advice is two fold. 1: don’t quarantine the files as this will break iTunes (and they aren’t actual viruses). 2: add an exception in AVG by following the instructions here.

This has happened to me and I uninstalled iTunes as a result.

AVG recently claimed that iTunes is a Small.BOG Virus, but if it's not actually a virus then why did it spread fromiTunes to Firefox, and other files? Please email me with an answer or even better a soultion to the problem.

i think AVG solved it.. it looks like it was a false positive.. i just manually updated AVG and it found 2 new update files (rather small less than 100k) and installed them.. now i can open itunes normally..

Calling itunes a “small bog” is very kind. Big bog wiould be much more honest.

Somebody said “this is why no-one uses AVG” well she is wrong. i've twice abandonded paid subsciptions to Nortons to go back to AVG. For me it causes far fewer problems.

  6. Matt

just did an update of AVG, and it worked; thanks kingleo1

Thanks King Leo. I did the same update and now itunes is ok

if you follow these instructions itunes will open succesfully:

    1) open AVG
    2) go to TOOLS then click ADVANCED SETTINGS
    3) go down to where it says EXCEPTIONS then click at the top right, ADD PATH
    4) then navigate to C:Program FilesiTunes and click OK.
    5) then navigate to C:Program FilesiPod an click OK
    6) Then click APPLY and then OK
    7) Restart PC(computer)

**note** (step 6, may not may available to find for everyone, but if you do see, the ipod folder under program files then go ahead and continue this way)

Let me know if it worked for you. BEST OF LUCK

I did the same, only i thought there was a virus, a lot of viruses, so i healed them and deleted them, and then deleted itunes. I tried installing again, and it won't work.

AVG has posted a new virus definition that seems to rectify the problem. Be sure to restart the computer after the new definition updates and remove any exceptions placed for iTunes. All should be fixed at that point. Mine works like a charm again now.

  26. Ico181

Go into AVG, find your “virus vault”, hightlight the iTunes files that have been quarantined (don't highlight the unrelated ones or you'll put other stuff back on) and click the restore button. Then update your virus definitions (click the Update Now button from the main interface on AVG). Restart your computer and you should be good again.

1:30pm eastern standard time, problem fixed by an AVG update, AVG no longer detects small.bog

  30. Rob

I updated AVG… Used iTunes Installer to repair iTunes… Everything works fine now… That scared the “you-know-what” outta me!!!

  31. Cherish66

Yea, I had the problem last night and instead of researching first, overreacted and uninstalled iTunes… now I keep getting a message that the “apple mobile device helper has stopped working” and iTunes freezes up. HELP!!!! Now what?

  32. Terry

Andy, I did the same. People that are not as computer literate and FREAK when they see virus stuff – quarantine, do whatever it takes to not see that red box. I'm really upset as itunes will not reinstall “interrupted” and I have an iphone and have never really used itunes but for that. If I deleted itunes are my movies that I've downloaded gone?

  33. Terry

what if you emptied the virus vault? I don't know how any of that works, but Lord knows if it was a 'virus' I don't want it in a vault – so I emptied all of it and now can't install itunes back on.

  34. Terry

Coming from completely iliterate computerwise, I went into my recycle bin found itunes 64? and restored it. At that point I was able to reinstall itunes with no problems.

  35. Bri

This happened to me too, its a shame now it wont install properly again
